The Royal Opera & Ballet Turandot

“Turandot” is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini, which was left unfinished at the time of his death in 1924 and later completed by Franco Alfano. The opera is set in ancient China and tells the story of the cold-hearted Princess Turandot who challenges her suitors with three riddles. Anyone who fails to answer correctly faces execution. However, if a suitor answers all three riddles, Turandot must marry him.

The plot revolves around Prince Calaf, who falls in love with Turandot at first sight. Despite knowing the deadly consequences, he accepts the challenge and answers the riddles correctly. Yet, Turandot remains reluctant to marry him. Calaf then offers her a way out: if she can discover his name by dawn, he will sacrifice his life. The opera reaches its dramatic climax as Turandot’s icy demeanor begins to thaw, and love ultimately triumphs.

The beautiful but icy Princess Turandot will only marry a man who can correctly answer three riddles. Those who fail are brutally beheaded. But when an unknown prince arrives, the balance of power in Turandot’s court is forever shaken, as the mysterious stranger does what no other has been able to.

“Turandot” is famous for its powerful music and the aria “Nessun Dorma,” which has become one of the most iconic pieces in the operatic repertoire.
